A Creation Centered Service of Lessons and Carols
Dec

A Creation Centered Service of Lessons and Carols

On Sunday afternoon, Dec. 8, all are invited to participate in a unique take on the traditional service of Lessons and Carols annually performed by the choir at King's College, Cambridge. In the chancel and almost entirely by the light of candles, our service will recreate, through the drama of reading, choral music, and congregational song, the incarnation of God's Word, Wisdom and Spirit in the life of Jesus and, through him, our salvation. The entire service is designed to help us experience the early church's conviction that in Jesus, the Cosmic Christ, the Word and Wisdom of God, saves not just is, but all creation.

Christ came into the world not because God loved us, human beings, but because God loved, and loves the created world. The Greek word here is kosmos – the whole creation that God made and called good. This includes what St. Paul calls “all things visible and invisible”, and what the Creed describes as “all that is – seen and unseen.” God loves the world, the water, earth and sky; the creatures swimming, walking, crawling and flying; this buzzing, blooming, bleeding world. We are a part of that world. God loves all things living and growing, and all things dying and decaying, all things, intimately, tenderly, without condition.

The choir has been hard at work on new music for this service. Invite a friend, and don't miss it
